Spreading Super Joy

Disappointment results when expectation falls short of reality. For many of us, that could be our mantra this year. It’s been like no other. And yet, we’ve had a lifetime, some of us longer than others, to prepare. I decided this would not be the year to disappoint.

It was everywhere in the news prior to Thanksgiving this year. Don’t be a “super spreader.” I was conflicted and for obvious reasons. I’m a rule follower. I make very few concessions, and if I break any rules at all, it’s because I’m behind the wheel of my super speedy Prius. But this year, this holiday, was different. I’ve been obedient for eight months, following the necessary restrictions in order to stop the spread and ultimately save lives. I don’t take that responsibility lightly. But, we’re talking about Thanksgiving here, a time meant specifically for family gatherings. I’d spent almost three decades of my adult life living abroad, and rarely spent the holidays with my extended family. I had a decision to make.

I was determined to host my family Thanksgiving dinner, just as I’ve done in years past. I mentally gathered up all the lessons I’ve learned since March and disseminated the house rules to those planning to attend. First, I asked people to stay home if they didn’t feel well. We have a couple of young teething grandchildren, so I knew this rule could potentially come back to haunt me. I informed everyone I would be wearing a mask to prepare the food, and encouraged others to wear them while in the house. I asked the parents to keep the little ones out of the kitchen. Have you ever convinced a toddler to cover his or her mouth? Me neither. Instead of sitting all together, I asked everyone to sit “restaurant style.” We had tables set up throughout the house, basement, and even on the extensive back deck despite the oppressive Ohio weather. Sitting atop one another would not be an issue. Lastly, we ran our ceiling fans and cracked a couple of windows for ventilation.

With a good plan and great intentions, I was ready to cook up a feast! We’ve all had failed attempts, wrong turns, and faulty expectations. But, this time was the exception! Our Thanksgiving holiday get-together was a success. It turns out my family members are pretty great at following the rules too. I realize we won’t know for sure how we made out until the incubation period has passed. But, I’m 99.9% confident the only thing we spread was joy.

Next up—Christmas. Oh joy…
